In the last decade, ownership of homes abroad has almost trebled; today, around 300,000 Britons have homes abroad and by 2025, it is estimated that around 1.3 million Britons will be living abroad. Many Britons have retired to countries such as Spain, the most popular location for pensioners.
According to a recent report by Grant Thornton, a comfortable home with a better guarantee of sun is one of the chief reasons for taking the plunge, with 38% of buyers saying they will holiday in their new home or eventually use it as a place to retire.
So, countries such as Spain which have a growing overseas resident community are developing residential care homes and care services for the expatriate community. There are are also some elderly Britons who are seeking a restful break for rehabilitation or convalescence, but need the support of a carer, nursing or medical staff; going abroad is now an attractive option.
