Read the guide
Read our Guide to Private Medical Insurance. It can help you decide which of the individual health plans or family medical insurance you need, show you how to keep costs down and provides reviews of current products.
Private medical insurance plans aimed at the over 50's and the elderly are listed on the right. Select from the list of individual health plans to view details of what is offered.
Inevitably, as we grow older, the body does not always do what it once did. Medical problems such as arthritis, heart condition, hernia and varicose veins, are more common.
If you are fully retired or semi-retired in part time employment, your income may be less than before. Many, but not all, insurers want more premium the older you get. Justifying the cost of full private medical insurance is harder.
You may have previously had the benefit of an employer-paid or subsidised policy, which ceased when you left or retired.
Even if you are in full time work, you may be reluctant to pay for a full policy with covers such as pregnancy or for young chldren at home, which are no longer relevant.
Many medical conditions connected with age do not need urgent treatment. This means that common problems can involve long waits for NHS treatment. Unfortunately, while you are waiting you may be in pain and/or your mobility may be restricted. Private treatment is an alternative, and this is where individual health plans come into their own.

Approaches to health insurance for the over 50's and the elderly
It is worth checking:
- limited cover schemes
- to see if your former employer offers any scheme for retired employees
- to see if your union offers any special deals
There are some companies who offer special schemes for older age groups, or where premiums are not age related.
