Benefit from new knee surgery techniques at LCH

Arthroscopic surgery

Arthroscopy is a “keyhole” operation that is used to look inside and treat joints, especially the knee joint. It is performed through very small incisions in the skin, using a narrow telescope (arthroscope) attached to a video camera. Compared to open surgery, which involves a larger incision, keyhole surgery has a high degree of clinical accuracy, is less painful, carries less risk of infection, and enables people to recover more quickly. An arthroscopy may be used to investigate knee problems, treat conditions such as arthritis and inflammation, take small samples of tissue, or repair damage to tissues and cartilage. The procedure can be done as a day case - without the need for an overnight stay in hospital.

Computer assisted navigation orthopaedic surgery

Image Guided Surgery is the latest advancement in orthopaedic surgery and is available only in a few centres in the world. It uses technology similar to the location and directional tracking systems used in modern aeroplanes, ships, etc., it is in fact a GPS system for the surgeon. The anatomy of the operating area is assessed and displayed accurately & 3 dimensionally. As the surgeon uses an instrument during surgery, the IGS camera like the GPS satellite calculates its position and then transfers the data to a computer. The whole system offers the surgeon a virtual 3D navigation support system. It allows very precise, safe and perfect surgeries, which is beneficial to the patient.

Safety and higher success rates are the two main advantages of Image Guided Surgery. In surgeries like joint replacement, better reproduction of natural anatomy allows better movements and longer survival of the joint replacements, which allows a more seamless rehabilitation process through application of bone and muscle preservation procedures.

Knee replacement surgery

Unicondular knee replacement
Depending on the condition of your knee, a “total” or a “half” knee replacement may be done. In a half knee operation known as “Unicondular Knee replacement”, only the inner or outer half of your knee is replaced.

Total knee replacement
A knee replacement replaces damaged or worn parts of the knee joint with a prosthesis made up of metal and plastic parts.
There are several different types of knee replacement. Some need special bone cement to keep them in place. Other types of artificial knee parts are coated with a chemical which encourages bone to grow into it to hold the components in place. Your surgeon will discuss the various options with you.

The operation
A knee replacement takes one to two hours and is usually performed under a general anaesthetic, which means that you will be asleep throughout the procedure and will feel no pain. Alternatively, the surgery can be carried out under an epidural that completely blocks feeling in the leg but you will be awake. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, an incision, usually around 20-30cm (8-12 inches) long will be made down the front of your knee. The length of the incision may be shorter depending on the technique your surgeon is using. The worn or damaged surfaces will be removed from both the end of your thighbone and the top of your shin bone. The surfaces will then be shaped to fit the knee replacement. The replacement parts will be fitted over both bones.

After the new parts are fitted and tested to make sure they move smoothly, your surgeon will close the wound with stitches or clips and cover it with a dressing.
