Nuffield Hospitals: Knee replacement surgery in the UK
Many people have arthritis of the knee but only a small number will need a knee replacement – usually those suffering pain or disability as a result of arthritis. Knee replacement surgery involves replacing damaged or diseased knee joints with an artificial one. The knee surgeons and specialists at Nuffield Hospitals will decide whether this type of knee surgery is appropriate for you, based on the severity of your symptoms, and whether you you may be suitable for full or partial knee replacement.
Nuffield Hospitals has 40 hospitals nationwide and is committed to providing healthcare excellence that is accessible and affordable to as many people as possible. They have a network of not-for-profit independent hospitals and 80% of the British population is within a one hour drive of a Nuffield Hospital. Knee replacement surgery is one of a wide and comprehensive range of procedures provided by Nuffield Hospitals.

What is involved in knee replacement surgery?
During a knee replacement operation, the surgeon removes the parts of the knee that have been damaged by arthritis, and replaces them with new artificial parts made of metal and plastic. Modern knee replacements involve resurfacing the worn out joint surface whilst preserving ligaments.
The operation can last up to 90 minutes and usually involves a general anaesthetic or an injection into your spine to numb the lower part of your body. You can expect to stay in hospital for approximately five to seven days depending on the progress you are making. During this time, a Physiotherapist will start helping you exercise your knee to regain movement as soon as possible.
