LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomilieusi)

LASEK eye surgery (Laser Epithelial Keratomilieusis, also known as Epi-Flap) is used when a patient’s cornea is thin or if other medical conditions predispose the patient against the LASIK procedure.  LASEK eye surgery combines the positive features of PRK and LASIK but differs because it doesn’t involve the creation of a corneal flap.  Instead, the protective outer layer on the surface of the eye (known as the epithelium) is softened with alcohol and folded aside while the cornea beneath it is exposed to the laser, and the epithelium repositioned.  A bandage contact lens is placed over the cornea to aid healing for approximately four days and as with PRK the overall recovery period is longer than with LASIK.
