PRK (Photo-Refractive Keratectomy)
PRK (Photo-Refractive Keratectomy) is performed similarly to LASIK (using a laser on the cornea) and was the most popular procedure until LASIK superseded it in 1989. PRK has successfully treated hundreds of thousands of patients since the 1980s replacing the traditional scalpel with the high tech and precise Excimer Laser but it now only tends to be used when it’s not possible for patients to proceed with LASIK. Although PRK achieves good results for the correction of myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia and astigmatism, vision can take several months to recover and only one eye can be treated at a time.
Other options for treatment:
- LASIK
- LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomilieusis, also known as Epi-Flap)
- Intra ocular lens implants (IOL)
