Patient Care Pathway - Gastric Banding
The following sets out the key milestones in the pathway which leads up to and beyond surgery – the Patient Care Pathway.
- Initial physician consultationThe purpose of this initial physician consultation is to assess your eligibility for obesity surgery and (more specifically) which of the available procedures would be the most suitable. The consultation will cover your medical and surgical history, lifestyle, current medication and weight history. The surgical procedure, together with the risks and benefits will be covered in detail.
- Schedule for surgeryIf you meet the eligibility criteria and decide to go ahead, you will be listed for surgery.. Please be aware that notification from the hospital may take 7-10 days.
- Pre-op nutritionFor a period prior to your surgery you will be given a low-calorie diet. This will help to reduce the volume of the liver, making surgical access easier. Healthier Weight Centres will supply you with the appropriate nutritional products as part of your care package.
- SurgeryOn the day of your surgery you will normally arrive at the hospital early in the morning. You will meet with the surgeon and anesthetist who will ensure that you understand the nature of the operation. You will be in hospital overnight and will usually be fit to be discharged the following day.
- 8-weeks post-operative nutritionOn leaving hospital you will begin your 8-week post- operative diet consisting of 3-weeks fluids, 3-weeks puréed food and 2 weeks small amounts of normal food. You will be given detailed dietary instructions to follow for this period. Each week you will speak to our bariatric nurse or health educator by telephone.
- Aftercare PackageHealthier Weight Centres unrivalled aftercare package ensures that you are helped every step of the way. 24 hour emergency cover and monthly support groups are part of the package which also includes a comprehensive band fill policy.
