Gastric banding is a commonly practiced operation in Europe. It involves the placement of an adjustable silicone band around the top part of the stomach. There are many and varied designs of LAGB and one should research this area pre operatively. Most patients are discharged the day after having an adjustable gastric band placed. What is the Gastric Band Service?
The Gastric Band Service is a professional organisation that facilitates obesity treatment for English speaking people who chose to travel to France for surgery. The Gastric Band Service hopes, for many reasons, that you initially consider surgery in your country of residence and should you chose to travel overseas that your decision is not based on cost alone.
The Gastric Band Service was developed by an experienced health professional, Sharon Bates of de Montagnac Consultants in the UK. This role includes coordinating and triaging English speaking patients for one of the most experienced bariatric surgeons - Dr Vincent Frering in Lyon, France.
Sharon works as an Advanced Nurse Specialist [Counsellor] within the NHS in Bristol and in the private sector at the BUPA Hospital, Bristol and the Cheltenham and Gloucester Nuffield Hospital.
Sharon is also actively involved in research linked to obesity and weight loss surgery. All private sector work is carried out under the umbrella of de Montagnac Consultants Ltd.
Sharon underwent gastric banding in 2000. Her surgeon was Vincent Frering.

Pre-operative support and preparation
If you decide to opt for surgery in France, de Montagnac Consultants will:

- Arrange appointment dates and a date for surgery.
- Advice on booking travel and accommodation.
- Moral support and advice on living with a gastric band, directly from people who already have the gastric band in place.
- Provide advice on follow up care and band adjustment within the UK.
