Visit: www.londonhandandwrist.com for more information about sport injury assessment, treatment and surgery in London.
The London Hand and Wrist Unit specialises in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of many sport injuries, bringing together world class surgeons and therapists who practice at four of London's leading private hospitals, The Wellington, The London Bridge, The Lister and the Portland hospitals. The London Hand & Wrist Unit is recognised internationally as providing expertise and high quality care for all patients, adults and children alike, with conditions affecting the upper limb.
The clinical team
The Unit includes distinguished multi-disciplinary team members from four specialities. Consultant Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgeons, with specific hand and wrist training, provide the medical and surgical care together with specialised occupational therapists (OTs) and senior physiotherapists (PTs) providing the rehabilitation services. These therapists are known as Hand Therapists. To ensure the highest quality of care, only specialised and experienced staff will be involved in patient treatment.
Hand therapists and hand surgeons are available at the Wellington Hospital, the London Bridge Hospital, the Lister Hospital and the Portland Hospital.
There are currently fourteen surgeons who form the surgical team of the London Hand and Wrist Unit.
Sports injuries treated
There are many different conditions and injuries treated by the London Hand and Wrist Unit. They provide surgery, treatment and therapy for the following:
- Finger, hand, wrist and elbow fractures
- Soft tissue injuries to ligaments and tendons eg. Skier's Thumb
- Wrist strains and sprains
- Tendon ruptures
- Epicondilitis eg. Tennis Elbow, Golfer's Elbow
- Muscle tears
Some conditions need to be treated with surgery, but many conditions are able to be managed by a hand therapist using conservative methods such as casting and splinting. They can use specialised splinting skills to fabricate removable thermoplastic, neoprene or softcast splints that can be worn whilst returning to your chosen sport.
Rehabilitation using the Primus RS simulator
Patients attending the London Hand and Wrist Unit have the advantage of using the Primus RS Simulator which has been instrumental in the rapid recovery and rehabilitation of several professional sportsmen.
Following periods of immobilisation, required for healing, exercise programmes are advised to help restore range of motion and strength. Using the Primus RS simulator, programmes of graded resisted strengthening can be tailored specifically to the patient's chosen sport.
