A charity has called for improvements in the way Britain's elderly people are cared for following a report which shows many old people struggle with everyday activities in their own home.
Help the Aged found that a quarter of pensioners need help to carry out daily tasks around the home and many have difficulties having a shower or bath.
Joe Oldman, the charity's senior housing policy adviser, said that the majority of pensioners want to remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible.
"But as people get older everyday activities around the home get harder, many need help to carry out basic tasks which others take for granted," he noted.
Mr Oldman also said that elderly people's inability to bathe can be detrimental to their health and wellbeing.
He pointed out that the government's care of the elderly could be improved by providing grab-rails or shower units, thereby preventing many accidents that can leave people in hospital or requiring private residential care.
