Lasik eye surgery has become safer and more widely applicable thanks to rapid technological improvements, an expert has revealed.
Speaking on a recent course at the American Academy of Ophthalmology's 2006 Joint Meeting, Dr A. John Kanellopoulous said that Lasik had significantly improved in recent years and that more patients were now able to benefit from the technology.
"We are seeing that we are able to help many more people who have had a poor outcome from a previous common Lasik procedure to correct myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism," the expert revealed.
"In fact, the rate of success for vision improvement in those patients is better than 90 percent."
Dr Kanellopoulous explained that the two main areas of improvement have been in the delivery of the procedure and in the diagnosis of patients' vision problems, meaning that patients can now be more confident in the procedure.
"Emerging technology should be a great comfort for patients considering Lasik for common disorders or for more serious ocular issues," he said, adding that eye doctors would also benefit from having a reliable tool.
Lasik can now be used to improve vision in patients who have previously undergone eye surgery such as cataract removal.
