BUPA supports cancer charity

BUPA Health Insurance has given £50,000 worth of creative help and marketing advice to the Bury Cancer Support Centre, which helps more than 2,000 cancer sufferers each year.

Forty volunteers including experts from BUPA Health Insurance and staff from leading North West advertising agencies Black Sheep, WWAV, Red C and Cypher Direct, spent a day helping the charity develop itself and reach more cancer patients and their families.

Currently the centre is open for two days a week at a local church hall. Volunteers offer thousands of cancer sufferers complementary therapies, counselling, access to an information library and a cafe. The centre has ambitious plans to move to its own premises, provide a week-round service and employ paid staff.

Hundreds of ideas put forward on the day included suggestions for securing sponsorship from businesses, fundraising initiatives, campaigns, developing the charity's website and even renaming the centre to broaden its appeal. The charity opened in 2003 to fill the gap in support for cancer patients in the Bury area. It does not charge for its services or restrict the number of visits or treatments available to patients. Recently, the centre has expanded into outreach work, visiting the homes of cancer patients who are no longer able to visit the centre.
