Obesity surgery is the "best suitable option" for morbidly obese people, an expert in India has claimed.

Dr Rajsekhar Nayak, who did much of his training in the UK, recently set up an obesity clinic in India called the Nayak Institute of Gastroenterology.

He claims that obesity is the leading cause of many diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.

Dr Nayak said: "In order to address the malaise of obesity, bariatric (obesity) surgery has emerged as the best suitable option to rid the body of excessive fat.

"One needs to consider diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary artery disease, hyperlipidemia, and degenerative joint disease, which are all directly weight related and potentially reversible with bariatric surgery," he said.

The expert revealed that, prior to starting up a dedicated obesity clinic, patients had to travel further afield for obesity treatment.

"This is where I realised the need for a city centric obesity care and cure fully fledged clinic and inspired me to start this centre," he added.
