Insurance company trade body The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has launched a draft guide on critical illness insurance, which aims to help consumers better understand what it does and the main conditions covered by it.
The guide is not yet available for consumers, as the new draft is being studied by the industry.
It explains what Critical IllnessI insurance covers, why people need it, which conditions are covered, exclusions, how much it costs and how to make a claim.
The second half of the guide is a reference guide which contains a list of the ABI CI definitions with technical and plain English descriptions.
Nick Kirwan, head of health and protection insurance at the ABI, says: “This guide builds on the work we’ve already done to make definitions of illnesses clearer and the application process more straightforward. Ultimately, all our initiatives are geared towards increasing the number of claims that are paid.”
The ABI is seeking views from insurers, financial advisers, charities, voluntary organisations and any other group or individual with an interest in Critical Illness insurance. The consultation period runs until 28 September 2007, after which the Guide will be sent to the Plain English Campaign to obtain a Crystal Mark.
