The growing number of lone parent families could be driving an increase in the number of women applying for life cover says Click Life.
A study of 250,000 men and women by the online life broker reveals the number of female life cover applications has grown from 8.8% in March 2006 to around 34.5% a year later.
Click Life says the increase in female applications coincides with a fall in male submissions from 91.2% to just 65.5% during the same period, and it suggests the figures follow the socio-economic trends research from the Office of National Statistics.
The data shows 90% of lone parent families are headed by a woman, many of whom have never been married.
Steve Teague, managing director of Click, says: “A logical spin-off of this trend is that women are adopting traditional male roles like arranging life cover. The facts and figures from our research, backed up by the ONS report, suggests even single parent families are waking up to the fact it is sensible to have a life cover in place.”
