Cosmetic surgery is rapidly becoming a socially acceptable method of helping to make people look younger, with over 100,000 people estimated to have received BOTOX® treatments last year.
Lynda Burgess, creative director of Cosmetic Surgery Answers, describes the field as a "growing and exciting sector" and reveals that she has witnessed "a real interest in both surgical and non-invasive procedures".
She told Easier.com: "It is clear that women (and some men) in the UK are keen to look as young as possible."
However, those considering BOTOX® treatments are advised to ensure that they visit only reputable cosmetic surgery clinics as a number of patients have recently been hospitalised following injections with an unlicensed product which had not been approved for human use.
A new report in the Journal of the American Medical Association gave details of four cases where patients had been given doses that were significantly higher than the estimated lethal dose.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Health told the BBC that they were "considering the form of regulation that would provide the best approach for both treatment providers and their patients".
