The private Bupa Hospital at Harpenden has added bariatric surgery, a form of obesity treatment, to its list of procedures.
One in four adults in the UK are now obese, according to recent statistics, a fact that prompted the private hospital's decision to begin offering the treatment.
The procedure, which is conducted via keyhole surgery, involves inserting an adjustable band around the stomach, thereby restricting the amount of food that can be consumed before the patient feels full.
In this way, the patient consumes less and significant weight loss can be achieved in a short period of time.
Lisa Trybus, business development manager for Bupa Harpenden revealed that full counselling and support would be offered by physicians, dieticians and psychotherapists, both before and after surgery.
"I think cosmetic surgery has become more popular because it's not a taboo subject any more," she told the St Albans Observer.
The procedure will only be available for patients with morbid obesity who have previously failed to lose weight by other methods.
