Specialist breast surgeon, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, genetic and familial pre-deposition to breast cancer, adjuvant endocrine therapy and benign breast disease.

 
Professor Michael Baum MB, ChB, FRCS, MD, FRCR (Hon) is a consultant breast surgeon who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer who has been treating breast cancer for over 20 years.
 
He set up the first breast cancer screening centre in the UK under the aegis of the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) whilst Professor of Surgery at King’s College London in 1988 and leads the research on adjuvant endocrine therapy for early breast cancer. 
 
In recognition of this work, he was awarded the gold medal of the International College of Surgeons, the Miami breast cancer award, the San Antonio award and the prestigious lifetime achievement awards from the Society Internationale de Senology and the Swiss St Gallen prize. 
 
He pioneered the subject of psycho-social oncology and has just retired as the chairman of the psycho-social committee of the National Cancer Research Institute
 
He also pioneered intra-operative radiotherapy and currently chairs the international trial of this new modality. 
 
Professor Baum has also held chairs of surgery at King’s College London, The Royal Marsden Hospital and University College London.
 
His clinical interests are primary breast cancer, genetic and familial pre-deposition to breast cancer, adjuvant endocrine therapy and benign breast disease.
 
His research interests include adjuvent endocrine therapy, intra-operative radiotherapy, psycho-social oncology and CAM
