Robert Thonet MB FRCS (Eng.) FRCS (Ed.) FRCOG : Consultant Gynaecologist, London
Robert Thonet is one of the most experienced gynaecologists practising in London today.
After studying medicine at King’s College, London, and Westminster Medical School, Robert Thonet qualified in 1971.
After an initial gynaecology post, he gained wider general surgical experience before becoming a
Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in both Edinburgh and London in 1977.
He then began further specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology initially at Queen Charlotte’s Maternity Hospital and Chelsea Hospital for Women in London, and later at Addenbrookes Hospital and Maternity Hospital Cambridge, obtaining Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1979.
In 1986, having been Senior Registrar at Manchester and Oldham (where the first IVF baby was born), Robert was appointed Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Queen Mary’s University Hospital. It was here, in 1989, that he founded the Assisted Conception Unit, one of the first and largest such units in South East England, after several years interest in fertility problems. In 1991, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRCOG).
As well as his interest in fertility, Mr Thonet also specialises in colposcopy and hormone replacement. His extensive surgical experience covers all general gynaecological surgery, both abdominal and vaginal, as well as surgery for uterovaginal prolapse and related conditions.
Robert Thonet is a member of the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP), the British Fertility Society (BFS) and the British Menopause Society (BMS).
Consultations for gynaecological problems
Every consultation takes place personally with Robert Thonet. You may be referred for a consultation by your doctor (GP) or another consultant, but this is not always necessary – you can book an appointment directly.
After all consultations, Mr Thonet will write to your GP – unless you specify otherwise – with a copy of the letter sent to you, explaining the outcome of the consultation. One of those outcomes may well be the need for treatment.

Investigations and treatment
After most consultations, some form of investigation (test) will be needed to determine treatment. These investigations often involve hormone tests (at a particular time of the menstrual cycle) and an ultrasound scan, normally performed shortly after a period.
All operative procedures are performed by Mr Thonet himself, and take place either in his Outpatient Clinic or after admission to one of the private hospitals where Mr Thonet operates.
Outpatient clinic procedures
The following investigations or treatments can usually be undertaken at the outpatient clinic:
- Fitting an IUCD (including Mirena System)
- Insertion of hormone implants
Hospital treatment
The following procedures require treatment in hospital, although the majority do not require an overnight stay:
* These treatments necessitate admission for more than one night.
Where a general anaesthetic is required this will be given by one of Mr Thonet's Consultant Anaesthetist colleagues.
