Franco Favretti : Consultant Obesity Surgeon, Manchester

Dr Favretti has performed more than 3,000 obesity surgery procedures and is widely regarded as one of the most experienced bariatric (obesity) surgeons in the world.

 

Dr Favretti was one of the early sponsors of Dr Lubomyr Kuzmak who, driven by a sense of purpose and passion to develop a better surgical treatment of severe obesity, invented the adjustable gastric band in the 1980s. 

 

Dr Favretti developed and standardised the surgical technique for laparoscopic gastric banding with Dr Guy-Bernard Cadiere in September 1993.  The technique has been adopted world wide by most surgeons using the LAP-BAND.  He regularly performs live procedures in front of audiences in Europe, USA, and South America and teaches at the European University of Laparoscopic Surgery in France.

 

Dr Favretti’s interests in obesity surgery include laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, laparoscopic gastric bypass (all variations) and a new procedure called the Bandinaro, a combination of gastric band and gastric bypass.  Dr Favretti also has one of the largest series of patients with the new telemetric gastric band, the EasyBand^®.  This band uses sophisticated electronics to open or close the band, without the need for an access port, thus eliminating the risk of access port infection and avoiding the use of needles for gastric band adjustments.

Dr Favretti has published more than 160 medical articles in journals around the world including The British Journal of Surgery, Journal de Coelio-Chirurgie, Surgical Laparoscopy and Endoscopy, International Surgery, Hepato-Gastroenterology.

 

His most recent paper provides the first gastric band study on life expectancy.  12 year results for nearly 2,000 gastric band patients show an 60% reduction in mortality
