Jonathan Walczak : Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon, Kent
Specialist in minimally invasive hip replacement operations and knee surgery
Mr Jonathan Walczak, MB BS BSc FRCS (Orth) was born in London and trained at Guys Hospital Medical School (1981-1987). His post-graduate training included a specialist fellowship in Hip surgery (1998) and he is on the Specialist register GMC number 3198863.
He has held the post of Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon at Bromley NHS Trust since 1999 and his NHS work is based at Farnborough, Beckenham, Sevenoaks and Orpington Hospitals.
His private practices are located at the BMI Sloane, BMI Chelsfield Park and Beadle House Clinic in Sevenoaks. He is very happy to see self-funded as well as insured patients and will readily feed back care into the NHS if appropriate.
He is recognised by all heath insurance companies and can confirm that his fees do not exceed the maxima. He can offer consultation appointment times from 9am to 8pm.
He also has an interest in sports medicine including injuries to hips, keyhole knee surgery, knee ligament reconstruction (including Anterior Cruciate ligaments) and calf and foot problems. As a keen runner and swimmer he understands the needs of the athlete.
Patient focussed approach
He has a "patient -focussed" approach to care and his philosophy is that he will do his utmost to make an accurate diagnosis and instigate treatment. He is aware that he may not be able to definitively deal with a given problem, but if he cannot organise appropriate care, he has a network of colleagues in other specialities who will be able to assist.
He is therefore very happy to utilise the services of (and frequently work closely with) Physiotherapists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Sports Masseurs, Acupuncturists and Podiatrists.
He is fortunate to have an extremely efficient full-time practice manager, who is able to rapidly respond to medical or administrative queries and he prides himself on his rapid response to any query or potential problem. Finally, his philosophy is that he, rather than the General Practitioner is responsible for the care of his patients after treatment or surgery and he will do his utmost to deal with any concerns as efficiently as possible.

Minimal access hip and knee replacement
His special interests are lower limb joint replacement including minimal access hip and knee replacement. He has developed a minimal access approach to the hip and have used this in over 500 cases of hip replacement. The use of this approach and his pioneering use of "Helica" Helium plasma scalpels has drastically reduced the need for blood transfusions in joint replacement surgery.
This has also significantly reduced the in-patient stay for these procedures to an average of four to five days. Patients are then able to regain strength and confidence, leading to a more rapid recovery. Furthermore, a reduced length of hospital stay helps to avoid the (very small) risk of contracting MRSA infection.
He utilises a variety of prostheses (artificial joints), which he tailors to the requirements of the patient. This includes Hip Resurfacing (Birmingham-Type hip replacements).
He is also experienced in the management of knee arthritis and again use a variety of prostheses replacing part (Oxford-type knee replacement), or all of the knee joint (Total condylar knee replacement.)
