Specialist in spine and hip surgery especially the management of degenerative disorders such as sciatica and spinal stenosis, neck and back pain, spinal infections, spinal deformity, spinal tumours and spinal trauma with special interests in implants for minimally invasive spinal surgery.
Mr Gavin Bowden is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust and the John Radcliffe Hospital, a position held since 2000. His main clinical interests are spine and hip surgery especially the management of degenerative disorders, deformity and tumours of the spine. His major research interest is the design of implants for minimally invasive spinal surgery and basic science interests include the physiology of the growing spine. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Oxford where he is a Fellow of Worcester College.
Mr Bowden, in conjunction with the other Consultants in the Oxford Specialist Spine Group, believes it is important to build an understanding relationship with patients as spinal problems invariably have a profound effect on patients’ mobility and lifestyle.
Mr Bowden graduated in Medicine in 1986 from the University of the Witwatersrand and was awarded the Gencor Prize. He then specialised in Orthopaedic Surgery in Cape Town. In 1995 he was awarded the Synthes Prize by the University of Cape Town and the Edelstein Medal (awarded to the outstanding candidate in the Orthopaedic Fellowship Examination) by the College of Surgeons of South Africa. Between 1996 and 2000 Mr Bowden was the Nuffield Orthopaedic Scholar and Clinical Research Fellow for the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council in the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oxford.

Mr Bowden’s NHS base is the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust, an internationally acclaimed centre for diagnosis and treatments of bone, joint and muscle conditions.
Outside of his professional commitments Mr Bowden led the founding of the Oxford Clinic for Specialist Surgery. In his free time he enjoys fly fishing, music and photography.

All appointments should be made via Mr Bowden’s Practice Manager, Mrs Mandy O’Sullivan, whose contact details can be found below. Mr Bowden is available for private patient appointments as follows:
- Monday mornings at St Lukes Hospital where his office is based; and
- At other times as required at either St Lukes or the Oxford Clinic
