A consultant urologist in Surrey, based at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and St Lukes Cancer Centre in Guildford, with wide General Urological  and Oncolgical experience and established expertise in Prostate Cancer including Cryosurgery, High Intensity Focused Ultrasound and Laser techniques.

 

He also provides specialised diagnostic skills including Template prostate biopsies and PCA3, the new urinary gene marker test for prostate cancer and has recently carried out kidney cryosurgery for renal cancer.

 

He also provides a Childrens Urology service. He is a Senior Fellow at the Post-Graduate Medical School, University of Surrey.

 
John Davies attended Bishop Gore School, Swansea and studied medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School, London. During his undergraduate training he attained a BSc (Hons) degree in Pharmacology before graduation with M.B.B.S. following which he commenced his surgical training.
 
He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeon’s of Edinburgh in 1985 and undertook a research fellowship at The Royal Marsden Hospital and Institute of Cancer Research, London between 1998 and 1990. His research involved the development of novel agents for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer.
 
During this period he also collaborated with The University of Maryland and spent three months at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and then M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston Texas. He attained expertise at these centres in Radical Nerve Sparing Prostatectomy and the management of locally advanced prostate cancer in cryo-surgery. He obtained Specialist accreditation in Urology in 1992.

He was appointed Consultant Urological Surgeon at The Royal Surrey County Hospital in 1993. He introduced Radical prostatectomy and laser prostate surgical techniques to the hospital in association with The St Luke’s Cancer Centre in Guildford. He also introduced the nurse specialist practitioner role in association with the University of Surrey.
 
In 1988, in collaboration with American colleagues from New York and Los Angeles the technique of cryo-surgical ablation for locally advanced and recurrent prostate cancer post radiotherapy was introduced in Guildford.
 

International referral base

He has a national and international referral base for this technique and many UK surgeons have attended to be trained in this surgical technique. Plans are underway to introduce kidney cryosurgery and High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HiFu) for prostate cancer.
 
He is a tutor on the Endoscopic Surgical training course at The Royal College of Surgeons, London and also lectures at The Institute of Urology Post Graduate Urology Course based at University College, London. He was lead clinician in Urology 1997 to 2002.
 
Since 2000 he has coordinated an active research programme in prostate cryosurgery with the University of Surrey and has published widely on this subject. In 2003 a Research Fellow was appointed in association with The University of Surrey. This programme is on going and the second research fellow is due to be appointed in September 2005.
 
In 1997 he cofounded the Prostate-Project charity to help support the more rapid diagnosis of prostate cancer, improve awareness and support research. To date this has raised over almost 2 million pounds and has enabled the Prostate Project Foundation Oncology Chair to be funded at the Post Graduate Medical School.
